Lois Zangara

by Lois Zangara
(Dawsonville, Georgia)

For many years in America, we have celebrated the national holiday of Thanksgiving. Traditionally, this has been a family time in which we return thanks for God’s bountiful blessings. Typically, we will gather with family and friends to eat, fellowship, and gain a few pounds. Then, later watching the football game or resting because we are so tired from the preparation and cooking. Over the next week, we will all busy making preparation for Thanksgiving especially for the Thanksgiving meal. We are making decision like which house we going to be eating at or who’s cooking the turkey, the dressing, dessert or which football game to watch. These things are important especially if you are in charge of the shopping for groceries, preparing the food, or cleaning the house. While all these things are important in daily life, Thanksgiving, to a Child of God, is more than a holiday that we celebrate.

Thanksgiving is an expression of joy and gratitude to the Lord. The Word says that we are to thank Him for who He is and for what He does. Praising God for who he is called adoration; praising God for what he does is called thanksgiving. Your praise may be in words, in a song or in a prayer individually or collectively, private or spontaneous. Throughout Psalms, there many are commands to praise and thank God. The word says God desires sacrifices of thanksgiving. He wants us to acknowledge our dependence on Him by giving thanks for his mercy and grace. Psalm 50:14-15 says, “Sacrifice thank offerings to God.”

Throughout the Bible, the principle “Thanksgiving brings multiplication and increase” is found. The best illustration of this principle is found in Psalm 67. Be encourage to read and meditate on this Psalm today. Then begin to thank God for his blessings of past, present and future!
